Ladies, now it's Showtime. Let's show them we can rise from Ash, Jane, Lavender and Scarlett Phoenix. Power so can't. Go where we. Rise. They tried to ban us with. One like a flower. They didn't know we had a Phoenix's power. Phoenix Power. What's up everybody? It's your girl Jade Phoenix. We are coming to you from the Lavender's Nest in this week's rendition of the Phoenix Gay podcast. How you doing, everybody? What's up? How you doing? We're all here. We're all here. We're in person. Yes, which is even.
Better, which is even better. We are not dealing with the constant interruption of podcast kitties, even though there is a podcast Kitty here. Yes. There is one, but he likes to listen and feel involved. He's very chill. The most he'll do is maybe come here to feel like he can include himself in the conversation. He's very chill. Right now he's very angry that he wasn't offered a slice of pizza. He can chill. So he'll just stare at us. It's true. We're getting looks of death from the poor baby and that's fine.
It's absolutely fine. But yeah, as you know, we are in the lavenders nest, so let's obviously introduce lavender. It all started when I was born, hey? Everybody, this is very exciting. This is my new apartment post ceiling collapse. So this is a very, very exciting day for me and I made sure to put in a coat rack you did, which is just filled with all my coats. I love it. So no, it's actually very much helpful. Amazing, very much helpful. I'm just. Excited to have folks over and it kind of leads into what we're going to be talking about because I've openly talked with all of our friends here at the gate that I can't wait to host a shindig themed around this entire topic.
Today, that's true, but we can't get started until we obviously introduce our third What's up news, What's up. How's it going? How was your calzone? It was good. It was great. It was great. He inhaled that. He inhaled that. Like I can't even tell you how quickly that that man ate that. It was a full bone swallow. It was a like just unhinging of the jaw. We straight up like looked away for maybe 5 minutes to have a girl wrap sash. And half the fucking calzone was gone. Not again. All of it was gone.
No, no, half, half When we first started. And then we looked back and it was just like, what the fuck? Just gone. Just. Etsy giggles lost into the. Voice, I got no shame. I fucking eat. I'm hungry. I eat whatever you want, brother. We are not food shaming you Sir. We are literally impressed. I am impressed. I did at your at the freaking just sheer amount of food that you can eat. Feel like we all wish we could inhale things that fast. I know I do. And you stay so fucking thin and I hate you because he just.
Laughs. Men just burn off the calories like that. It takes a certain. Listen there, there's also women, a lot of women that I do know that do burn off those calories like that you do. Yes and no. Better than me. I mean valid. Better than most. Better than most. And I think like also it depends because like when I eat at home, it's a very balanced like that's fair. One vegetable, 1 meat, 1 grain. It's a very like organized system. Yeah, no, I think it's cool. I I'm jealous over the people that can actually like eat whatever the fuck they want and not gain like 50,000 lbs.
Yeah, which is why when we go out, I like, let myself indulge. I unfortunately, I'm not one of those people. I have to have pretty stringent portion size valid, you know, so and, and it sucks. And which is it? It also kind of does feed into our topic today because you have to have a certain amount of patience and portion sizes of what we're going to be talking about today, which is board games versus tabletop games versus video games. Oh hell yeah. I'm so excited because I play all three. Same. What about you?
Is that really a question? Yes, yeah, we want you to answer Crimson. Oh my gosh. Ask a question to the person with the game design major. Yeah, exactly. That's why we're asking you. Not all of Phoenix Nation knows that. Well, now they do. Now Phoenix. Nation knows that our Crimson actually has a degree in game making. Yes, yeah, obviously I played all three. I mean we have to technically to know how to properly construct the proper game and that both goes based on physical or digital. So doesn't really matter, it applies in both aspects.
Yeah, see. Like for me, I've been, I've been, I'm a lifelong gamer. Like I started when I obviously since I'm older than both of you, shut up. I started earlier, I had the original Nintendo, I had the original Sega, I had the PlayStation one. Like every single game system that's come out since the Nintendo I've had, I've played on, I've been obsessed with. So like gamer, very much so. But also, I used to play computer games as well, which like there's an argument in our group chat in Cult of the Orange Menaces group chat that PC is superior to any system.
And on a lot of levels I do have to agree, because the PCs are very much more capable of the processing power as long as your computer has the processing power to do it. Yeah, like if I had the space for APCI would already have one. Same. Oh wait, I do, thanks to our Crimson. Hell yeah. That was my birthday present. No Christmas present. Christmas Christmas present. Your birthday is coming up. That's true. My birthday is coming up. I'm kind of excited, but also at the same time dreading. It We are very excited for our jade here.
I'm never good about my birthday. Which is why we need to make it awesome I. Don't want it and. Well, you're having it. I don't want to be a year older. Please no I don't. Want it take a bit? Yes, you do. Well, not a year older. I mean like birthdays are important and we love to use them as an opportunity to highlight our lovely Jade, so everybody should keep some eyes and ears out on the socials for when we make sure to wish Jade a happy birthday. That is true. Honestly, we are constantly plugging the fact that you guys need to give us a like and a follow on all of our social media.
We are found on every single listening platform out there. Spotify, iHeartRadio, Pandora, you name it, we're on there. Unfortunately not on the tabletop games. You can't necessarily find the Phoenix gate on a tabletop game. That's not necessarily true because the Phoenix gate does have a twitch that is. True. See. We do have a twitch, we just have not been utilizing. Exactly. We eventually will. We do. Most likely I will start probably broadcasting Magic the Gathering. Nice. Very excited that I'll be playing with a couple of friends of mine in a pod.
I'm teaching Lavender how to play Magic the Gathering because their partner is just. I wanna sling cardboard with you. What's happening? Let's go. He's supposedly pretty good and I'm just sitting going. Yeah, okay. There is actually a whole box of magic cards that I don't think he saw them when he walked in. I did, but I didn't want to say anything because the obsession in me was like, I want to look at. It yeah, there is an entire string backpack right now in my nest that is filled with decks and magic cards.
Please tell me that they are properly freaking taken care of and they're not just Willy nilly in a string backpack. Because you literally no, no, no, no, no. He has boxes inside of the string backpack that's inside of a larger box. OK, like an actual like a deck box, deck box. OK. So and then he has all of his decks inside of the big giant deck box. Did you see the horror on my? Face yeah, I saw just like the I didn't even have. To see it I could sense. It you could sense. The you could hear it.
I could hear it. Yeah. The. Horror. Do not worry, it is not Willy nilly in a string bag. The entire deck box is inside of the string bag. I'm still getting ready for when I decide to start building my own decks. I'm just going to build decks that just to piss people off. Oh then then you and my partner will get along really well. You don't even know how to play his entire goal. It's. Not going to be hard for me to learn. That is true the gamer guru that is Crimson since you know he's the cool one because he has the game design like diploma.
We forgot. They can't see the movements. Yeah, that's Why don't you say it to us? Why don't you just say it? Oh.
My God, that depression. No, but really what I'm just looking to really build is more just just those types of decks that you're just like fuck you. Oh, he's a fuck you guy. Yeah, that's literally my partner's entire Oh my. God. Identity as a Magic player, from what he's told me, Chad, it's like, oh, did. You just build a whole army of salamanders and just had them really just swarm and kill your all your creatures. Oh yeah, I did, by the way. Yeah, that, that's right. He has a whole Lord of the Rings deck just based around the fact that he can.
Make endless elves. He can make not only he can make endless mana and endless food. So. He can essentially play whatever he wants. He's. One of those. Yeah, he's one of those. Or the time that he played Wolverine in an epic game where Wolverine was turned into a bug, but they were able to come to the conclusion that Wolverine continues power maxing despite being a bug. What the fuck? Oh my God. So, you know, just like a clear warning for everyone, these are the things that this man tells me brings him joy when he's playing Magic.
He is one of those guys. He's one of those. Guys, Oh my God, Yeah, What? I find him super funny too. You know what it is? What, whenever I go on either any social media or anything, and I just start seeing that video of like this guy's dancing, he's like blowing in like a rainbow color. Yeah. And all that's happening, he's going like this. Where? Oh, he's getting up. Oh, the Crimson is getting up the Crimson. Has gotten up and he's going to be demonstrating this and I should be videoing this to put on our social media.
He's doing a whole little dance and he just points down with both hands and then you just see two more spawn and then those ones start dancing and then you see another 2 pointed and it just keeps spawning. And spawning. Over and over and over. Oh my God, he's one of those people. I can't get enough of that. Every time I watch that I keep fucking cracking up. It's the greatest thing, my favorite meme that I've seen in my limited knowledge of magic. But because my best friend loves magic and my partner loves magic, it's now in my algorithm and my partner is one of these people who him and his friends do this where they print like their own custom cards and they're all big titty anime girls to fuck with each other.
God, the proxy cards. The proxy cards so all I see is there's this hilarious woman who's like yeah, learning magic is easy and then it'll be like oh this does this this does this just read the cards this does this this does this and I'm. Not it's. No, all of a sudden the proxy card comes up and goes. Oh, and this isn't trying to use
and that's all I think about now. Yo, OK, listen, listen, listen. So my pod wants me to play. They actually want me to play today even though I told them we were recording. And I'm just sitting there like, yo, y'all are crazy because all you do is sit at home and find different ways to make different decks that are just going to destroy everything that I love and cherish. And I'm not even going to be able to get past turn 3. Like I what the fuck? There's a game there. There's a card that one of them has that makes literally everything that they have on their board indestructible, and I'm just sitting there like, no, you should not be allowed to play that card because then how the hell am I supposed to ever hit?
You. Yeah. And like, what's the point of that play? What the fuck? And then he was also telling me. Because with the Avatar, the Avatar edition of Magic that just came out like last year, there is a card in there called the Walls of Bossing, say, and he has the ability to turn. This is a defender card. He has the ability to turn that defender card. It is a 0 / 30 card, which means it has 30 defense but no attack because it's a wall. So I'm going to attack you. He has a way of making that card at 3030.
OK, but all I'm imagining. Is like the. Wall of bossing say like growing legs like Allah attack on Titan and sending a Titan out from his walls. Yeah, kind of, that is. Literally all I'm saying. You know it's funny. He just literally just that there's this, this is his fucking shade. All he wants to do is just burn down everything you know and you love. And the other thing, you know what he calls this deck? What is Colin Robinson deck? No, yes, no, because it just sucks your life force out of you, your will to live.
OK, but that is actually the best What We Do in the Shadows reference I've ever heard of. A totally different arena of life. Right. I love this we. Love Colin Robertson. We we are big. What we do in the shadows stands. And actually, we should mention what we're doing in two weeks. Oh yes, very exciting. Because this episode comes out the week before, but we should definitely talk about it before we get into the nitty gritty of what we're talking about. We are going to be featured at Moonlight Market Expo, which is the first of its kind.
But you guys have known that we've done other Moonlight markets in the past? Yes, and we do Ally Tropicana, all owned by our good friend Pat. El Churro Entertainment and what we love the most about these events is the Moonlight Market was like a night time goth spooky, you know, alternative market. Now we're trying to turn that into a 2 day event and one of the greatest things that we get to do while we're there is our Lavender is going to get to sit down with Guillermo. We love him. Harvey. Harvey Yuma.
Boy, yo, dude, you're going to get to sit down. We're going to interview him and we, you know, it's just going to be the unhinged chaos that you have come to know and love from the Phoenix Gate in our interviews. Oh, 100%. And we are very excited to also be able to talk about he's going to just announced quite a few weeks ago actually, that he's going to be starring in the new rendition of Rocky Horror Show coming to Broadway. He's playing Frank and brother. He is gonna be playing Eddie and. Perfect, perfect, perfect casting.
Yes, he's gonna be playing Eddie and also Doctor Scott. I believe he's doing a dual role. I'm, I've gotten that wrong. But I know he's definitely playing Eddie and he's playing another role, which I'm pretty sure is Doctor Scott. But if I'm wrong, I apologize in advance, Harvey. And don't you worry, I'll have Googled it and written it down. It would already be in the books. Yeah. But stay tuned for that because that's coming up in the next two weeks. We're going to have that on all of our social media, but only three forms of our social media.
So these interviews we will only be able to see on our YouTube channel, on our TikTok and on our Instagram. So you need to be following us on those if you are a fan of either us or of Harvey. Yeah, 100%. You know, or of anything because we've interviewed so many people. And we've got a bunch of new interviews that just went up that our Jade did, which were fantastic. At the last big event which I'll be at again on the 21st of March. So don't worry, you guys won't be able to miss us like at all. No.
And we have a bunch of interviews that are coming out from the Toy Expo that we just did. The first, again, another first of its kind, the famous case. So blessed to get to go to a lot of these first. We're always there in the ground up and we're innovative. And that's why we love talking about like the beginning of things where This is why we're talking about board games versus table talk games versus video games. Because in a lot of ways, all three of us in our own ways have been at the ground up for a lot of these things.
Like I was there for the first Nintendo. I was born the same year exactly. Played that system from day one. Like when I was old enough, obviously I played that system, I played Super Nintendo. I've been there from the ground up of video games. I remember when computer games were first starting to become popular because they would have the floppy disks, the floppy disks that they you would have to put into your computer. And this is before having a home computer was super popular. So you would have to play these computer games at school.
Yes. And you had to put them in the the drives? Yeah. The floppy disk drives. And they would actually do multiple of them because they wouldn't be able to hold all the data in just one, yeah. It's true. I remember I. Think for the Doom series, I think that you did that as well. Yes. And I remember the very first time that they released a computer disk, it was like not a floppy disk anymore. It was like the CD style, the CD-ROM style of a game. And that was, I believe, might have been Duke Nukem I. Think you're correct.
I believe Duke Nukem was the first CD-ROM game for a computer, but we're going to double check that. But I'm saying like we were there for a lot of firsts. Obviously, though, when it comes to board games, we're not the first. No, I mean, they've been around for a very, very long time. How long? Lavender. Just talking about some of them originating around 3100 BCE. 3500 Oh really, 3500? BCE even further, even with Mesopotamia, because I'm looking right now at Ancient Egypt being some of the first where we have a recorded board game because they actually had them in the sarcophagi with the Pharaohs.
Yeah, board games of literally, they have an over 7000 year history. These literally started coming around. The game that they're talking about is a game called Senate. Early games are often represented religious or strategic concepts evolving from ancient high luck or abstract strategies into mass produced thematic and educational games in the 19th and 20th centuries. So from 5000 BC to 400 BC, the oldest known board game appeared in the near in the, you know, Far East in Egypt, and that was Senate.
And this was a spiritually significant game. And then Go emerged in China around 548 BC Archaeological sites show games in Turkey and in the Neolithic period, often involving race based mechanics, which is pretty. Cool. Yeah. I mean, when you think about it, like, aren't we all just chasing some form of serotonin, whether it be playing a game or booting on your favorite gaming system, turning your computer on? Yeah, it makes sense that the ancients also really cared about finding entertainment and bringing some meaning to their everyday lives.
Yeah, classical and medieval period we had from about 400 BC to 1500 AD, we had games like To Fall, which is a precursor to chess, and that was very popular in Europe. And then we had Tabula, which is a Roman game, and it was considered an ancestor to what is now Backgammon. I loved I there's one called Patuli which was in Mesoamerican game and it was a bean game, so they used the beans as dice and they would use them for a high stakes gamble. That's pretty. Cool. That's pretty cool. You know, I mean like, I'm pretty sure like every ancient culture.
As a version of a board game. Oh, 100%. It probably varied too, just on the culture and what was happening at that time, what was most important to the people of that area, what? Was needed to be learned exactly. Yeah, because I mean, a lot of us learn a lot of different things from earliest board games, like think about Go Fish. It's true. Taught us how to match and count, no problem. It's true. So commercial games though, that's the difference. Like, these are all ancient games that everybody knew or were taught how to play or like the aristocracy were able to play and obviously, you know, stuff like that because like these, some of them are also considered the games of the Pharaohs, the games of the king.
Exactly like them being in the pyramids with them for the next life. Like we we have no idea if the common man like the, you know, like us three at the gate here were able to actually play these games or knew how to do it. But I'm assuming that everybody somehow found out. Oh I'm sure they were like classic like everyday versions of them. You know when it comes to certain cultures a usually sometimes with some of these board games you see more of the upper class actually playing. Agreed, because they had the most leisure time to do so.
Exactly, and it also they didn't have of, you know, at least the lower class. It's not like they had the means to have the board or whatever pieces for playing the game. This is true because a lot of the times these board games were made of precious materials. That, I mean some of them also depends on you know. Production. Production that's that's I think more it's more under production because at least when it comes to I think what was a go. Yeah, go. You had to collect the the the little pieces like that's how you play it.
Like you had to collect certain pieces. Yes, and I think I remember some of these games because of Hunter Hunter. Hunter. Hunter. Oh my God. You're. Right. The reason why was because of the Ant King he was. He was just out here just playing, just his having his whole army decimating the whole general public and he's over here just collecting board game players. Do not even. Scale and just not any board game players the masters of these board games like the the the upper, the creators. Like, no, not even.
First off dude, let me just say this as a developer, just because we make the game does not mean we're the master of it. That's fair. That is totally fair. That is fair. It's a big difference. Sometimes there are just people who know how to play the games that we make better. That's true. That's just how it is. But no yeah, he he he collected like I guess from just like international like best chess player international go, like best go player. I mean there was another game board Game 2 as well.
I forgot what it was, but after he after he beat them, he just straight up killed him. Wow it. Was like, that was done, we're done. With you, but I'm trying to remember if if the board game that he was playing with that one girl, the blind one, I'm trying to remember if it was go or if it was something else. But all I remember is those board pieces were not made of something like extravagant. It wasn't like made of gold or silver. No, no, no. Precious material I think it was from the most part. I just looked at it like they were just made of like the basic materials.
Probably wood. Yeah, yeah. So. Because I believe that go pieces are made from like, cherry wood, yeah. Yeah. And I think they used rocks in Senate. I think so too. But like the upper class could use jewels too. Yeah, so I guess, and not only that too, it's just more of just like I guess the board games were more taught in a way because you didn't really just have just like it wasn't just a game that everyone knew how to play. No, yeah, you needed someone who knew how to play, to TGU, how to play.
And usually those people are the upper class. Yeah. And that's actually kind of funny because this is the rise of the commercial game that started, which came around in the 16th to the 19th century. And so far the one of the earliest produced commercial board games circa around 1480 is known as the game of the Goose. It was a board game that was produced back like literally in the 1400s. And that is the earliest known commercial board game that we know of right now. And then in by the 1840s, especially in America, games shifted towards teaching morals such as like a game known as the Mansion of Happiness.
OK, but I kind of love that name. Yeah. I don't know. I want to live in the mansion of happiness. Yeah. And then when of course, obviously we started going through the industrialization era and the quote UN quote modern age, we had the early 1900s. You had a game came out in 1903 called the Landlord's Game, which was designed to teach economic principles and was the predecessor to Monopoly. Yes, it was the original monopoly of monopoly. And that, yeah, it's actually still an ongoing fight within that community of, oh, did they steal the landlord?
'S game. Technically, it's most likely. It's a whole, It's actually really fun. You can fall down a YouTube rabbit hole about this, as you should. And hours and hours. As you should, but games also we reflect popular culture as we got into the mid 2000, you know, 20th century, you know, 1900s, like late whatever. And these are games like Candy Land and Clue and all these fucking stuff. And I'm sitting here, it's like, OK, you know, like the game of life, yes, which was a fun game that I used to play as a kid.
Checkers is even like you know was came around because it was the simpler version of it was like supposed to be an amalgamation of chess and backgammon. Obviously God bless for checkers because I can't figure out chess to save my life. That's fine. So I am the perfect audience for checkers. I believe it. And then like in the late 20th century of German games, IE like the Settlers of Catan and stuff like that, shifted away from direct and violent conflict towards strategy building and resource management, which is really fun.
When did you say that one? Late 20th century. 19's about right, yeah. Late 20th century? Not necessarily. OK, tell us, video game major. 1995 was when it was released in Germany and that's when it was first released. That's the late 20th century. Because that's 19th. 19th No. The 19th century is the 1800's. The 20th century is the 1900s. I'm. Losing. I'm losing my my my my. You're losing your mind. I'm losing my mind because we were born. Towards the end of my mind, I would not be talking. We were born in the late 20th century.
Oh my, we're in the 21st century right now. That's why that episode of Seinfeld is hilarious, because he's planning his next generation next. Excuse me, next century party for the new year 2 years in advance. But when it becomes 2000. It's true. Like you got to understand that, like the historical themes of all board games, now we're talking about board games were spirituality and religion, education and morals and stimulation. Like that was the goal of a board game. And board games obviously have evolved in especially I would say in the last like 50 years.
Oh, 100%. To be just not just like, you know, something fun, but it's competitive. Oh, it just becomes too like, I mean, obviously games are always competitive, but I mean like competitive competitive where they have leagues built on the games that you can play. But that usually depends on the game though. Yeah, I'm not saying it's every game. I mean, I'm not. I'm just sure there's a Candyland. League. That's what I was literally gonna say. It's just like. No, I mean, maybe there is. No. No. You guys didn't know about my Candyland League?
I'm like really offended. No, I think, I think what? You are you the queen of the Peppermint forest like. Yeah, I know. I think what you're thinking about or what you're saying is probably more of a 1V1 scenario type of game. Yeah. So chest, yes, checkers. Did you just say chest? You did. Yeah. There are chest leagues. Chest leagues. Not chest, chest. You said chest, you said chest. I didn't say with a chi. The Cheshire is at home. As you guys can see. Noose is still focused on his calzone. Yeah, Crimson is still thinking about how beautiful and gooey and hammy that calzone was.
But chess checkers you don't really hear. I've never heard much of A. I know, I get it. I never really hear. I don't hear of a chess league. I've heard of chess leagues like obviously because you have grand masters, yes. And they have like official, like there's been Olympic competitions, I think, for chess. Yes, that and ping pong. And ping pong, OK, but like, that's where obviously, like you get into a different realm because from all the board games, people started creating what is known as now tabletop games.
Yes, tabletop games are a completely different beast. And a lot of them focus on a lot of RPG elements, which are kind of touched upon in traditional board games. Yeah, but go more full force in tabletop, or at least in my experience, more full force in tabletop. Because there's nothing saying that you can't play Clue and totally role play through all of Clue. If you know, Tim Curry told us anything from the Clue movie. Yeah, you could full blown role play the game Clue if you really, really wanted to.
Of course, and there are so many people that I know that'll create AD and D campaign around a board game. Oh, I feel like Clue is probably the perfect. One, you should not. You can even, I mean, shit with D&D, you can fucking put that shit around anything. Yeah, you can get. It to essentially as long as you. As long as the core mechanics are still there, you can code that shit with a different theme. I mean fuck you could put a Pokémon DND. Don't tempt. I think the best one I ever did was when I was first learning to play DND Shout out to my friend Will when I lived in Florida and he's like, he's a great dungeon master.
And he was teaching me. He knew, he knows that I love DuckTales. It's like my favorite thing. And at the time, in 2018, the new DuckTales series was still regularly coming out. And I loved the reboot. So he actually built an entire campaign around DuckTales. OK, but for I love that for you so fucking. Because him and I were obsessed like we would actually get together after work. I think it like the episodes dropped on Disney Plus on like Thursdays and, and we would watch them and it got to the point that we're like, well, if you're going to teach me D&D, we might as well do it with our favorite hyper fixation.
And we developed an entire DuckTales D&D campaign, and it's still probably my favorite campaign I've ever played. Which is funny because Crimson and I were having a debate on whether tabletop and board game are not the same. They're definitely. They're not the same. It was this, it was the discussion of DND was a board game, and I said it was not, mainly just because it doesn't have the traditional setup for a board game. No, but that's, that's The thing is like in the research that I've done, no matter what, whether you refer to it as a tabletop game or a board game, it's technically the same thing.
It's just different games. It is classified as tabletop regardless. Regardless, it is all tabletop because you got to play a game on a table. Yeah, exactly. You know, or the floor you could. Play there, there, there are different. There are different. There are different classifications for a board game and a tabletop game. I. Don't. Because what you can also do, we can even argue the point where let's just say for example, those Pac-Man games that you actually have a full on table and you place the screen on the table.
Yeah, you could even say. Then you can argue the point of saying that's a tabletop game. Why wouldn't it be a tabletop game? Yeah, you had, I mean, seriously, Senate's played on on a game, man. Collis played on a table freaking. You know, these are early tabletop games that were used. And then in Greece they had Petia that you mentioned, where it was played on a board of black and whites with black and white stones, which is similar to modern day checkers. And then in Rome you're the game of Ludus Lantron Lantronculorum, or the game of mercenaries, which was played on a board with small pieces representing soldiers and Knights.
What does that remind you of Stratego and Warhammer? And like every single game that requires miniatures to play. Honestly I love miniatures and games like I one day I will eventually make miniatures for all the different characters I played in D Indy because what's fun about D and DI think especially as a tabletop is you can create your own miniatures and even like newer versions of games, actually update their designs all of the time to have new miniatures in their games. I would. Say that I think the revolution I would call this and this is a personal opinion, this is an in my opinion, this is a jade opinion.
If you come for me I'll stab you, but I believe that tabletop gaming board games got a revolution in the 70s with the introduction of. D&D. Oh, 100%. Of Dungeons and Dragons, I do fully believe that they they revolutionized tabletop gaming by creating Dungeons and Dragons. Am I wrong? Repeat that question again. I said do Do you agree with me by saying that in the 70s board games, tabletop gaming got the revolution that it needed with the creation of Dungeons and Dragons? So, so so so because I'm the deep side, I want to make sure I'm grasping exactly which you're saying that tabletop.
So you're saying that tabletop got in general tabletop board, whatever the hell you want to call it? Got a revolution? Got the revolution the recognition. I guess it would be a better way of saying it because of DND. I wouldn't call it a recognition, no, because everybody knew what board games. Were no, no, no, no. It got more probably recognition would not be the great word to use. It was more it it was it had more attention brought to it. Yes, revolutionary. What not revolutionary? Because you can say revolutionary is something could be classified for something different.
Attention is a completely different thing, where you have more people coming towards that category of games where OK, because of this particular game it brought the attention towards all these other ones, not revolutionary. Revolutionary can mean a whole different thing. I still think DND is revolutionary though. We can argue semantics. No, exactly. But I think you also agree with the core of what Jade was saying, that because of DND we were really introduced to all these new things. It helped popularize the genre more and allowed.
People to create exactly vain or even better ones like because honestly D&D is the OG. Oh yeah, like that's the original template, you know, and it helped create community around gaming, I feel like. You know what D? And D was the early community aspect. I would not say that D&D brought more people over. D&D brought people more over to D&DDD&D being released or not released, but more popularized. Probably brought more people more in the game developers to actually create games with more RPG elements and then in turn bring those people towards them.
OK, I could agree with that. Because you, we, we and I I pay attention to this since D&D&D started becoming more popular back in good what? 1970s. I wouldn't even say 1970s because 1970s even then it wasn't as like. It wasn't. I see what you. Said it wasn't, it wasn't as let me say this. It was popular, but to a select group, yeah, Because people and that group was. And that group was not even as big then. Yeah. Because they were demonized. I know, but hold on, let me finish. They weren't. They were demonized.
OK, cool, whatever. But it still was not as popular. Regardless, we already we can't. We can't deny that later on as the years go by, that DND does the revisions to as well, right? They started advertising in a little bit more. In the 90s. Exactly. Then we start getting particular games they would throw out. So there's Catan had some RPG elements, probably even took maybe something a little little something from that as well as other board games because. They're gathering came out of the 90s. Exactly.
But we can even say that it's not even considered or gotten much influence from DND because depending on the rule set, right? Yeah. Yeah. It probably got the RPG where it's just like, oh cool, like I'm my own type. Of I'm my own person. I'm my own person and I'm creating a I'm using. I'm going to use sellers as a Cortana as an example. I'm my own person and I'm creating my own settlement. Yeah, I'm expanding on that, right. OK. Yeah, I could see that because. Hearing out my resources. Doesn't really get much of the rules from D&D per SE, but there is the still RPG aspect.
It took those exciting elements that got people into D&D and implemented them in different types of games, like I would even say with D&D, like media using D&D, even revitalized D&D. Yeah, in the last 15 years, like Stranger Things really brought D&D back to the point that they made campaign books around the D&D campaigns in Stranger Things, even though. I'm not going to say that it brought it back. I would say it made it more mainstream, yeah. Yes, that's exactly what I was going to say. Because again, for for people who just watch Stranger Things and not paid much attention to D&D, the characters at least try to remember the villain's name.
My God, you forget it. No. The Demogorgon, no. No, no. Well, that yeah, but there was another. What was it, Vecna? Vecna. Vecna is also from D&D. The characters from D&D, yeah. Yeah, the character originates from DGD&D and people don't realize that like unless you actually pay attention to D&D, all of these characters, they're from the actual game. Yeah, and the way they did the finale, like no spoilers, but the way they did the finale is very much like how you would close out AD and D campaign.
Exactly. So a lot of like, I feel like that really brought it to like the mainstream and people that maybe didn't know about it earlier than that. We're starting to ask questions of like, oh, what is D&D? How do I play? Well, same with critical. Role, yeah, and Dungeons and Daddies, which I love. That's more of a comical take on it, but Dimension 20 in the same vein as Critical Role, where you have these really serious campaigns that fans are following and are really invested in. It's true for I would say also, like, you know, a lot of these games also gotten a little bit more like interesting to people over the COVID years.
Yeah. Because these were games that you could play with, you know, your friends even when you're not in the same room. Exactly, you could do it on twitch like you were talking about. It on twitch you could do it on zoom. Like there was ways to get around it. Like unfortunately with board games you have to physically be in the room. Exactly. So board games were great when I was, you know, trapped in my house with my parents and my brothers, and we needed something to do to not strangle each other, right?
So, And, you know, it's funny, we were talking about how video game, you know, we were talking before about how video games kind of like took over. Yeah, that whole aspect, which which it makes perfect sense because if you think about it, since prior to COVID, people would just wouldn't hang out in person as much. No. So obviously video games started becoming more of a thing where it's just like it's more of the convenience aspect where it's just like, you know, my friend might not be close by or my family members might not be close by or you know, maybe my, you know, my it, let's just say family who lives with me aren't able to play because of XY and Z reasons.
They work or whatever. They have some other things. All secrets. Video games still gave you that sense of connecting and playing a game with another individual. Could be a friend, family, whoever. Right computer. In the most recent age, because there's only times that we were able to do that beforehand with consoles, was not until the PS2. Yeah, it wasn't until PS2. We didn't get that until the PS2 and the Xbox. Exactly. So like, obviously Nintendo, you had to be physically there. Super Nintendo, you had to be physically there.
Even the PlayStation one, you had to physically be there, but on the computer. You could constantly play with others. You could do that with others as the Internet itself, life became a thing. So obviously PC takes the, the, you know, the head there because they were the ones that started it and then they figured out how to do it with the consoles over time, thanks to PC, which is, you know, you got call space flowers are going to be given where they're going to be given. And they have evolved over time.
Obviously, as the Internet evolved, our technology has evolved. You can still play some of these games online. You can play DND online in a simulator with people that you've never met. You could play Monopoly online. Yeah, which is crazy. You can play Uno online. Yeah, you can. Play. Yeah, exactly. There's clue a lot of a lot of Guess Who. If I gave, I wouldn't even be surprised if I were to look up right now and see if there's a Guess Who game dude. I I would not be surprised if they have it already.
I Scrabble. You kind of look like one of the characters from Guess Who. There's a lot of. Different. Yeah, there's a guy with a beard. You do. There's a guy with a beard that has a big long bushy beard like you, Crimson, and is also shaved on the top of his head. I actually have a copy of Guess Who. We'll take a look at that as soon as we we say goodbye to the Phoenix Nation. But yeah, no, like, these are all like things that obviously as our technology has gotten better and not to, you know, throw shade on our art, you know, elders, I would say, like my mom didn't have that.
Back in my day. No touchy back in my day I didn't have the ability to play with friends until then like late 90s where I was on the computer and able to play these games online. But even then, the fucking connection was just. Was like garbage. It was. Trash and then like again, as the Internet evolved, as technologies evolved, we've been able to actually connect without actually connecting and and that's what I love so much about. I would say the more within the last, I'd say 2025 years resurgence of the ability to actually want to be around people to play a tabletop game, a board game in person.
Let's also let's talk about how the fact that there are hundreds of different types of board games with from multiple different fandoms genres. Take your fucking pick. Can I can I touch on that? Oh, of course you can. Touch it, I give you permission. I, I started seeing those pop up a lot more since the start of COVID because of the whole situation. Obviously we'd have to be stuck at home and all that, but we started seeing even video games get their own board games. That's true. Literally the, I think the first one I saw, and not to say this was the first one ever to do it, but the first one I saw that were that that had done that was Monster Hunter.
Monster Hunter has like already like 3 or 4, maybe, heck, maybe even 5 expansions now on the series. And that if we want to even get into that, that's already has a huge RPG element to it. Because not only do you just stop at like, Oh yeah, like you hunt 1 monster and then that's it and then the game's over and then you win. Yeah, no, you can still take whatever character you have and take it into the next hunt. Yeah, like I think even just tabletop games that the other way around got turned into video games.
Like for example, I love Vampire coteries. The reason I love it the Vampire Masquerade is because they made a vampire coterie. Video game. On Switch and that like Coteries of New York, and that's how I got into really getting into the lore of the game. Like I still haven't had an opportunity to play a tabletop, but I know about it and I love it and enjoy it because I can play it on my Switch and still get the role play element of the game. It's. True and not only that too they even besides just Monster Hunter 2 they also have heck I mean they have dead by daylight yeah they have Resident Evil not just one they have both 1-2 and three from the franchise you.
And I just played the Aliens game. I was just going to say to that we also the Alien and that I think, you know, doesn't necessarily have well the correction they do have a video game, but multiple yeah but the board game itself for alien has is based off of the original movie. Yeah, it's rate based off of the movie. So, you know, you have your objective. You either go based off of what kind of whatever cards you get, you know, for your objective, and then that's it. You know, but heck, we start seeing these huge, you know, pop ups of of different video games getting their board game.
So I guess it's more it it, it's come it's making board games or tabletop, whatever you like to categorize them is coming into popularity more again. Yeah, I mean it's. Always been popular, it's just becoming again. The word I think is more mainstream. Mainstream. Yeah. That's, well, it's made a smile. OK. So you could kind of say it a little bit. Yeah, it's similar. I mean, I'm not saying it. Just just cease to, yeah. But like, this is what I mean when I say mainstream, because I mean Critical Role literally just started as a group of people who just wanted to play D&D and they filmed it and it got popular and that these characters became everyone's characters.
And now because of Critical Role, there's there's like 2-2 animated series about it. There's talks of like other things, like they have their own books. They hosted their own wedding for two of their characters inside of Amber Steinball. Huge Broadway style production. So let me, let me get this straight. Actually, I'm not talking about in terms of D&D, by the way, D&D I'm kind of categorizing itself separately because D&DD&D has been going constant. I'm talking. Yeah, I'm talking about more just like the other general board games, like anything else besides D&D.
That that is what I'm saying. You know, for instance, connect, connect four this, you know, guess who, you know those clue clue like those types of games they used to be at. If you were to go to someone's house and it was like, oh, let's play a board game. Those would be usually the games that you would always see in someone's shelf. I mean for fuck's sake, they made the Ouija board a board game. It's considered a board game. The Ouija board is sold as a board game. I remember if I'm not mistaken, I think it was.
I think it was with the not recent. I'm going to say recent because it was. I might as well re re reiterate, reiterate that as more of the last monster, the last Jumanji movie. Jumanji, I had that. Game they actually they didn't have did they have it originally before that last movie I don't think so they. Originally OK, so Mattela Reese, the original Jumanji game at with the original movie came out in the 90s. I had that game. But The thing is, they didn't. Did they have it exactly as the one in the movie?
No, no. So this is where I'm going to get you right there with that. They actually had, I don't know if they did a re release of the game, whether if it was a limited edition or not, I'd had to double check. I'm not exactly sure, but someone started re releasing the game, but exactly constructed as the one in the movie. So it's not just like the simple little flat cardboard, you know, kind of cheap. No like they had it to like the the little details on it. So like the little screen? The little thing on there.
The the the. The all that. Crystal, the moving pieces. I don't know. I don't know off that that might be a little bit stretched. I don't know about moving pieces that probably might make it a lot more expensive than than what most people wanted. You never know. But but no, like they had it the the game board exactly to tee them the details from the movie. That's pretty cool that I thought was super sick. And now there's even people, I think on Etsy right now that they're even making it as well. Yeah, like you can look on Etsy and you know, not to talk about trash human who wrote the original books, but for Harry Potter fans, you can go online on Etsy and people will make actual wizard chess and also the place where you should buy it because it's not supporting JKR, it's supporting an independent artist.
God, you can actually get Wizard chess that's made to look just like it's in the movie. Like, fandom has really drafted further iterations of board games. Like, most of my board games in my nest here are all based off of like, my favorite fandoms. Yeah, Ted Lasso, The Goofy Movie, Haunted Mansion, Disney World, The Game Eels, and escalators from SpongeBob. No, it's true. And then like, add into the fact that also some of the the times the fans will actually put out such a good idea that the game developer sits there and goes, yeah.
Why didn't we think of that? Like there was a they write fan fiction, they write board game, like like campaigns, all sorts of stuff. And then I've seen it actually be put into video games. Or like implemented into other media? Like Critical Role is a huge one. They take a lot of fan response and put it into how they write their campaigns, but also in like aspects of how they've brought the characters further to life, like in Bach's Mahina for example. Yeah, that's true. And you know what's even interesting, the fact that you were mentioning about that before Lavender, there's even, heck there's even certain people not even like companies, but just certain people that even help bring more attention back to certain older games.
Henry Cavill. Oh hell yeah. No, no, not. Not necessarily, actually. I'm talking about, let's just say as simple as the board game chest. The board game chest. They, there's been people like you were mentioning with, you know, the wizard chest. Yeah, the wizard chest there is people who even reskinned the pieces based off of Kingdom Hearts. Oh my gosh, that's so cool they do that. With Lord of the Rings too, I have the models for those too. I've had someone, I've had someone commissioned me for that, to have them printed so they can have it because they're, they're such die hard Kingdom Hearts fans.
They really love to have those printed. So I was just like, all right, you know, I don't mind. That's fine. I worked with another 3D artist while I was working on my own work. I would have easily done the 3D mods myself, but I was just like, you know, it's a little bit much for me to handle right now. So let me let me Commission outsource the the Commission for the models themselves, and then I'll just create them just to make it a little bit easier. But and then, heck, what's another one? I guess I said Lord of the Rings, They have like deluxe Lord of the Rings sets of chess, Yeah, where they're actually the characters from Lord of the Rings.
They. My my mother actually has that chess board. Oh. My God, she does. That's where I thought. My mother has that. My mother has that chess board because she is a huge Lord of the Rings fan. They have the different monopoly games were create like. They have Pokémon Monopoly, they have like. Pirates of the Caribbean, and that's the one I have. Like they they they have Animal Crossing monopoly I think as well they. Did I was literally going to touch on that one. I was that was going to be. That was my next thought.
It was just Animal Crossing. Yeah, because I was going to mention that was going to be the next thing I was going to segue into is. Just that they have all these different things and and these are just traditional games that have been around for 100 like, well, not decades. They've been around for decades and they just revamp the game and it's like not, not a whole new game, but like obviously a new ish way to play the game. They've been doing it with magic. They're doing it with magic, where they started by introducing a fandom into magic, and they started that with I believe it was Spiderman.
Yes, I think Spiderman was first and they. Released the Spiderman rendition of Magic the Gathering which basically they is absolute trash and when it comes to the actual gameplay and mechanics they released it really for the card collector but all those cards are absolute trash. When when when did they release the Spider Man 1? Two years ago, I believe. Well, they've done some, I think earlier than that, like the Lord of the Rings, the. Lord of the Rings came later. What? I could have. Because it was.
Based off of the books, not the movies. No, I could have sworn there was even a Transformers. Yeah, I thought so. Hold. On we're going to look. Our magic expert will get will get this right. For us, yeah, But I. Remember right now. I remember a couple, a couple different, I guess fandoms that they had released. They were, I know they released. I know just recently they just did Teenage Mutant Ninja. Turtles. Yes. That was this past year. No, no. It just. Came out this week. Oh, they started advertising it last year because it was at New York Comic Con.
That's, yes, they were. They were. They were, yeah. Hold on, I'm looking to see what. You mean Yeah, No, like I know Transformers 1. OK so now fandoms with magic are different because if you are literally with the fan, like because they were different fandoms that you could have in magic with the actual creator, the creations of magic. There were characters that you had in Magic lore that was behind a lot of these characters in just the world of Magic the Gathering. Yes. Then what they've done is with the introduction of the new wave, the new style of playing, which is called Commander.
They actually, I turned around and added in now fandoms because you have there was always like fandoms for the vampires. There was always fandoms for like, you know, anything like that because these all came from certain iterations of the game itself. But two years ago they decided to take it to a mainstream level and they started with Spider Man. It was Spider Man was the original not of the magic world fandom that they released. And then following that they had Final Fantasy. From Final Fantasy they had Lord of the Rings.
They then they went back to their old school roots and they released Lorwin Eclipse, which is a remake and upgrade of an original series that was from like 2010, 2009, I want to say around that time, which was the original Lorwin. Oh, is that the one that they worked with Henson Studios? Yes. Oh yeah, I've seen those. You said that the Spider Man released two years ago. Yeah. It was Comic Con 2024 that I first saw Spider Man being advertised. I I I think no, there has to have been more not not saying based off of characters from because they released a Transformers 1.
They they. Because I have a friend who was. You also need to understand that there is something called Secret Lair which does their own drops of cards. They're not they they are technically Magic the Gathering approved because you can play them, but they are the ones that do different fandoms like that. They're. Not they're not actually released by Magic the Gathering. That's interesting secret. Layer is its own thing that works in tandem, and if you're thinking about it, is the 2019 secret layer drop of the Transformers.
Oh, so kind of like how Funko does collaboration? 2019 that it was released then because I remember it was like between 2022 and 2023 that I heard about the Transformers 1 dropping. Right, that's the universe is beyond. It was the universe. It was The universe is beyond release. OK, Yeah. This actually was released. I'm going to tell you right now if I can find it, but these actually were from. It was a dual release with the new Transformers that was supposed to be coming out, but these were a secret layer drop.
I mean, if we really want to get into technicalities on that, if Magic the Gathering still allowed it and it still plays with the same rules as some of the cards, then I mean, yes, they're not directly released by Magic the Gathering, but they're still considered cards for Magic the Gathering. So in tandem, this is the history right here. Yeah. Wizards of the Coast, which is the ones that created Magic the Gathering in 2017, they began experimenting with the concept of creating Magic cards depicting characters from outside the world of the game story.
As I said, they began with a set of promos that was released at Hasbro con has con These are promo cards and then they started in 2021. They started what is known as Magic the Gathering Universe is Beyond. This is an expansive series of Magic cards based on other, you know, fandoms, including The Walking Dead, Warhammer 40,000, Fortnite, and Lord of the Rings Universe Beyond. Cards have been made available through limited time, online drops, prebuilt decks, and pack insurance with existing booster packs.
That makes more sense to me now because of when those like the slight knowledge I know from my partner, that makes a lot more sense. So wait, the Transformers 1 is not part of that list? It is. I said it's including these. This is not the the list. So what they did at Hascon, that's when they did the first release of the promo cards. It was a double faced Grimlock card. And then they also had following Hasbro theme cards as a nerf War Sword of Dungeons and Dragons, and these were all promo cards.
That's the only ones they did. Now Heroes of the Realm in 2018 started making a series of commemorative cards. Again, all Wizards of the Coast, and that's what they helped to create the Transformers trading card. It was not a Magic game. It was a Transformers, you know, trading card game. But they released promo cards that were also Magic cards, but they had the Transformers on them. That's 2018. Yeah, OK. Oh, but yeah, no, when I started hearing. About the Hasbro ones that you're talking about, the Magic cards 2022?
OK. So I was, I was, I was around the ballpark range. I was. Right where they were announced at Hasbro Pulsecon 2022 to get to, to say, hey, this is what we're doing, Universe is beyond, this is what we're going to be doing. That's when they released it. But it didn't become like super popular in mainstream with Magic until Spider Man which was 2024. OK, Yeah. If that makes. Sense. No, that totally makes sense that. So it's just, it's just the the different. And then of course, secret layer. The different fandoms and stuff didn't become popular until spider man came in.
Yeah, so basically what Secret Layer does in tandem with Wizards of the Coast is that they're known as what they do is reskinning a card. Same way that you know, the busty babes that you were talking about that they use as proxy cards on there. It's the same thing. It's the it's a card. It's just like example I'm waiting currently on my Furby deck. I'm so excited for you to have like. I'm going to have, I got the secret layer drop of all the Furbies. It's not enough to make a full deck, but I can put them in a deck and literally call that my Furby deck.
So that's what they do. They take popular cards or special cards or cards that they know are going to just be lethal, and they turn them cute or evil. It's like for instance, when they reskinned the soul ring. Yes, and then they made it the the ring from. Lord of the Ring. Lord of the Ring, the One Ring, right? With the one ring Post Malone owns. Well, he owns so correction, he owns the alt art. The only one ever created. The only one. The only one. There can be 1. Yep. But this is what I'm talking about, like the resurgence of this game and the people like.
And then obviously, because celebrity culture is so closely tied with game culture nowadays, because a lot of celebrities that we know are gamers. Which I honestly think is great and I think it really normalizes. Like something I used to say when I used to work at daycare was the thing that made me happy was seeing these things that were considered like uncool being like revitalized for these kids and they could enjoy them without having to worry about like half their grade picking on them. That's true.
You know, like, it actually gives me a lot of joy. I. Actually got picked on a lot for playing magic when I was growing. Up I hate exactly I hated that aspect and now you have again, I'm not I'm just a little mini rant, but but it's just like what the hell it's great, but it's also just like yo, you people suck because when this game was released or any of the other card games, I'm even gonna throw freaking yugioh out there and also even throw out the Pokémon card game out there like. 90s, yeah.
Like when people were starting to play these card games. Magic. Magic was probably the the worst. Unfortunately, 1993 we started. In 93, Pokémon came around in 95, and I think Yu-gi-oh was what, 98? 98 and 96 between one of those two years, yeah, it wasn't that far. Off, but I know it came after Pokémon and Pokémon was 95. Yeah, And, you know, I really hate the fact that people shat on people for just playing the game and enjoying like, like, how much of like. A loser do you have to be? Not even that.
Just like how much do you have to be like? How much do you hate yourself? But yeah, like why you got to be such a hater, dude. But you know, that that that was more of just like the aspect of how it was like back in the day, unfortunately around those times. But it's I'm happy though, that, you know, it's become a little bit mainstream. So like people don't get picked on for playing these? Games, it's just like, that's what makes me. Happy it's a fun game. Like why? Why you gotta be giving me such a hard time?
Just like, dude, I'm just here chilling, playing the game. Now here's the downside to that. It also makes it a lot harder to get the cards that I need to play.
It's a there's a give and take with everything. Oh, 100%. There's a give and take with every game. I mean, obviously like, you know, also when you're dealing with games like this, video games, board games, PC games, it doesn't matter. You have that super competitive people that are just like, and they're just going to do things, not just for the joy of playing the game. They're going to do it just to be like. I'm the best you want to know something I will I and another small mini rant here we go.
This is also I honestly, I will take that over scalpers. Anybody who scalps like dude, I can understand like, oh, you know, I you know, it's it's you know, it's on demand, like people want it. It's like, I get it, but at the same time fuck you, fuck you, because you can easily just have done it's like, oh, you know, I'm going to just get charge maybe 100 bucks more. That's. It OK, here's an. That's one thing. Hold on. Yeah, one quick thing. I'll let you go in just a minute. Quick SEC because I want to get this out.
Don't. Worry. I'm going to let you finish, yeah. You could easily charge like I'm going to use even consoles as an example here when we were having a whole council council console shortage when it came to the PS five. Yeah, right. They could have just easily just been like, all right, I'm just going to charge 100 bucks more. All right, cool. No, they want to double the price and. Look what they did with the switch and the switch too. Which I was just like, you guys fucking suck. They. Really do.
Like anyone out there, honestly. Like meet me outside. You're going to have words. May I speak now? Yes. You may. Why? Thank you. No, I'm gonna say like, honestly, like I haven't played Magic in a very long time. Let's call a spade a spade here. But I used to play. I think I stopped playing. I want to say actually believe it or not, around 2016. Probably like a right around when commander started, right? No, cuz commander's only a few years old. OK, yeah, so I stopped playing, I'd say IN202016 ish area.
So like I was only familiar with the original way to play and then I had to, I've now I had to relearn how to play the game. I have to relearn like not all like the original mechanics have not changed. But now it is harder for me to get my hands on cards that I need to make a deck that can even play properly with this new form and the people that are on it. And because of scalpers and things like that, it becomes that much harder for me to get my hands on things that I need to play. And then also it the MSRP of decks has gone up exponentially.
Like I remember and again, back in my day, you kind of shit, I remember that. Like you could go to the card store and you could pick up a pack of Magic cards for like 5-10 dollars, 20 depending on the freaking which one it is. Like if you're getting a Final Fantasy pack or if it's new Lorin packs, they can go up to $40 a pack. There are packs like and if it's one of the older sets and you just want to buy a pack or whatever of that $100 more like the collector packs for Lorin Eclipse, go for like 400 and change in a box.
I feel like that's the saddest part about like, I feel like it's. Twofold, right? Like it's so great that our fandoms and our games and everything we love is like more highly lauded, if that makes sense. But then I feel like you get like the twofold right? You get like the scalpers that make it more impossible and because of the demand, the price goes up. And on the other hand, then you get my least favorite type of human. Like not, not my current partner, but one of my ex partners was one of those like gatekeeper magic guys.
So it's like, for example, my partner is trying to show me how to play and he tells me all about it. It makes me feel really good and I feel like I can get involved and do something with him. But one of my ex partners from quite a few years ago, his whole thing was like, Oh well, like girls don't know enough about magic and like, oh, only I should know about magic because like I was taught by my brother and we actually know how to play magic. And it was like, dude, I just wanted to be able to share in your passion with you.
Throw them out the window. So it's like, I feel like you get too many of those. Sometimes with these fandoms now. Too, even more so with the inception of like Internet communities especially comes in with within race and within gender. It's insane. And that is the one, I would say downside to how people react to the popularity of these games. I mean, you should. It's called a hustle. It's OK to be like, oh, you know, sometimes it's frustrating when you play with someone that may not know the same, but who cares?
You're all enjoying. Exactly. You're all enjoying a common interest. You all. Enjoy it and it shouldn't have to do with, you know, women don't know enough about this or oh like they're just new fans or they just want to be here because they're pygmies. Exactly. Because trust me y'all don't even want to know some of the fandoms I'm in how just rampant that is. Meanwhile I have to be like I've been watching Star Wars since I was literally 5 years old and my dad showed me the original George Lucas commentary tapes so like get the fuck out of here with that.
It does. It drives me bad shit. But like any closing. Thoughts like I I know I'm a Big Magic fan. You're AD and D player Lavender, you you play everything comes in. I'm not even going to, we're not even going to cover not even going to cover that. But I want to know preferred medium, I guess would be the word. Like, do you prefer a video game? Do you prefer a computer game or do you prefer your board game? Depends on the mood. Like I love board games for having in person. Interactions and now that I have a much nicer nest I want to have people over for board game nights again.
I used to do those once a month and I really miss them. It was fun when I need time by myself. I personally like playing video games by myself. Yeah, unless it's something like a Mario Kart. And I love D&D just because I love the role play aspect and I also love that it's hybrid. I get to play with my friends in person, and now we find a way to also integrate, like my friends in Florida who obviously can't be there with us in person but are really passionate about the game. Yeah. So it's kind of like, I hate.
It's like such a cop out answer, but like a little bit of each depending on the mood I'm in and depending on like, what my brain that's not a cop needs. I don't know why you would think it's a cop out answer because honestly, I'm the same way. Oh, thank goodness. There's going to be days where all I want to do is play my video games. There's going to be days where I'm in the mood to play a board game, and there's going to be days where I just want to be around a bunch of people and play a big round of Magic or maybe even join AD and D campaign.
Join mine. No, I will not if I have. But listen. Listen, if I play DND for the literal first time, actually do an actual campaign, not a one shot if I don't do one with Tasha, OK valid. OK, my my, my platonic wife. No. Notes. She will literally come from Michigan. And murder me. So that she gets to take my DND campaign virginity. I'm sorry. I love you, Lavender, but it's been promised. It's OK. I support this. I love Tasha, so I support this. I support your wife. I. Just have you play the Digimon DND game down putting together?
Technically not Technically not a virtual DND, so this. Should be fine with her. We'll see. I'll I'll check with her technicalities. It's a. Technicality what what what it is not the. Legitimate DND game but. It plays with the same rules as. DND God. So is it really D&D? And here we go with that paradox one. 2nd Also Tasha. Sorry, don't listen to him, he's actually not. But anyways, yes. I am the same question applies to you Crimson. What is your preferred medium like? What would you rather do? You know as you are the the one in the authority because you have the game design diploma
pinky out, don't forget. I can't, you know, it's really hard to really give us a full answer for a medium, honestly, because it. I could either go either way on the spectrum. Yeah, because, you know, it really comes down to how I'm feeling that day. I guess for, I guess for like, let me say this, I guess I will give you the genre, OK? I can't give you like A and by genre. I mean like. Not like oh, board game genre or any any any particular genre that applies. That means it could be a board game, it could be anything, whatever.
If it's like a multiplayer RPGI can, I can fuck with it because if there's some competitive elements, all right, cool. If I feel like playing something competitive, all right, I could do that that day, that day. Or if it's a Co-op more, oh, let's go ahead and dungeon, all right, cool. I could do that type that depression.
But yeah, I think I will learn more in that aspect because there'll be days I just want to play like a story game. Like even though it has RPG elements, but I prefer my story games, especially when it comes with the whole new Resident Evil Requiem that I just picked that up. Yeah, it's on my list. I'm still. Waiting on my rest. In peace because. Amazon decided to Oh yeah. Let's let's. Let's keep taking on requests we cannot accomplish or fulfill. But yeah, we'll, we'll still take your guys's money anyway.
Why not? Yeah, I mean. Keep in mind they did refund. A good amount of people, but still. That's rough buddy. I'm having to wait almost a whole month extra for that freaking game. You want to borrow mine? No. Maybe.
Maybe. Because the only reason why is. Because because I could have gotten standard edition. I could have just gotten it. It could have, but I wanted my deluxe edition. With the steel. Book I don't have any steelbook games. I would like to have a steelbook game of some game. I have multiple steelbook games. Anytime I try to get one it just never works. I know. So that's why I'm just like oh bitch bitch, bitch. I will complain all the fuck I want. Listen, any time I get any collector's edition, deluxe edition, anything, something goes fucking wrong.
I can lend you my game I'm still working on. A few other games before I start the new Resident Evil. Anyway, you can borrow it in the meantime because apparently one of the people got the game on a pre release and speed ran through it in 2 1/2 hours. Two or three 2 1/2. Holy shit they. Speed ran. Through it in two. And 1/2 hours and then they. Double checked it to see if they just did it wrong and they did it again in two hours. Wouldn't be me, I couldn't. How the heck did they cut through? I don't know.
This is what I. Mean when I say there are some. Pretty talented fucking gamers. Oh fucking others. You know what it is? It's those speedrunners. They just, they just find. Some way to break the? Game in some way you can borrow my Resident Evil honey while waiting your one month for your special. Collectible. Yeah, it's OK, but. That's cool that you like prefer. I mean, and honestly, so then we're only against once again in agreement where all of us, it depends on our personal mood, who we're playing with and what we're playing, which will determine what medium of game what we play.
100%. All right then. All right then. So Nah, I'm good. I don't need any more. No further questions, your honor, and let's wrap it up. Bye bye, Zia. We. Love you, OK. Bye. Actually, I may not love you too much, but all right, bye.
